Learn how-to wash your car using dish washing detergent and water. This is a really easy way to keep a car clean. This technique works for me, it does a pretty good job. I’m sure there are other products out there which get a perfect, professional result. For me, this is a good enough result.

For me, the solution has to be quick, simple, easy and cheap. By the time I drive to the car wash, wait in line, etcetera, I might as well have pulled out the hose and washed the car myself. This is what people used to do in the 1950’s, wash their own car. It worked then, it still works now. I don’t really care about a perfect look, my car just has to look acceptable. My car is not going to car show, it is just driving on the road and it will get a bit dusty after 10 minutes of driving. The idea is that the car looks O.K. with minimal wasted time and effort.

My grandfather used to work in a car wash years ago, and he liked to use a good amount of spic and span powder (a household cleaner available at the time) diluted in water. He just used this solution and a rag. He rinsed off the car with water first, then washed it with the spic and span solution, including the wheels and tires. Finally, he rinsed off the car with a garden hose and clean water, and then dried it off with a leather chamois, typically used for car washing. This got a really nice shiny result.

I don’t even bother doing this good of a job. I just use dish soap diluted in cold hose water and poured into any available portable container. Warm water is also good. Then I spray off the car as well as I can using some sort of a hose nozzle, on a high pressure setting. This gets rid of the grit on the car. If there is dirt grit on the car, and you then use a wash cloth and water, the car will get really small scrapes on the finish. In industry, grinding and polishing people use a use a slurry (liquid plus grit) which is applied to a some sort of a spinning pad in order to do grinding and polishing. This is like industrial sandpaper. If you leave the dirt grit on your car, and then wash it, you are doing something similar—grinding and polishing. The slurry is the dirt and sand on the car plus the water and the polishing pad is your wash cloth. The spinning action used in industry is you washing the car by hand. This process can causes lots of little scratches on the car, and makes the finish less shiny. As a result, make sure the dirt grit on the car is rinsed off before you start washing. If your car is already old and scratched up, this is less of a concern.

Afterwards, I just rinse the soap off of the car off with a hose. The hose nozzle is set to shower, which seems to do the best job of washing off the soap. If necessary, I wash the car with a clean cloth once I start rinsing it off, to get rid of the soap marks. Then I let it air dry. Now it`s done.

In the winter, the water also dissolves the salt on the car. In the winter, I use neoprene fishing gloves, designed for fishing or hunting in cold weather. They are waterproof, and stop my hands from getting cold. It’s possible to wash a car outside in the winter time. I usually wait for a warmer day until the weather is just above freezing. In the winter, where I live, the car will be dirty again in 10 minutes due to the salt on the roads. The idea is just to stop the car from getting absolutely caked with dust and salt, so your clothes don’t get too dirty when you touch the car when entering it.

If you are concerned about the dish washing liquid, then wear some rubber kitchen gloves when washing the car.

The idea of this video is to give you a quick, simple, easy and inexpensive option to get quickly get the car reasonably clean and shiny. Try it on small part inconspicuous part of the car first. If you like the result, try it on the whole car. A car wash might cost $20.00. Doing it yourself might cost $2.00, it`s just the cost of the soap and water. Buy the dish soap when it`s on sale, it`s super cheap compared to some car washing products.

My car is unwaxed. I don`t like waxes, even though they look good, because once a car gets waxed, it always has to be waxed or it looks bad. For me, it`s not worth the time and effort to wax a car.
