When this system requires repairs or fails, there are a few signs to indicate something might be wrong. Typically, a leak will be seen under the car near the front left wheel. Other signs may include a groaning sound when turning. Another sign will be around the power steering reservoir where you may also notice foaming. Two parts of the system are the typical culprits: the filter within the reservoir, or the front input shaft seal.

Step 1 – Replace Power Reservoir and Hose

-With a turkey baster, drain as much fluid as you can from the power steering reservoir.

-With the pliers or vice grips, squeeze this clamp together and pull the hose off.

-Then do the same to the other side of the hose connected to the power steering.

-Remove this hose connected to the other side of the power steering reservoir.

-Finally, push this clip back so you can pull the reservoir up and out of the engine bay.

-Install the new hose and reservoir in the reverse order of removal.

-Refill the reservoir with new fluid if the drained fluid was dirty.

Step 2 – Replace Power Steering Pump O-Ring

Another common area for the leak is the front input shaft seal on the power steering pump.

-Place a towel under the inlet joint bolt.

-Use the adjustable wrench to remove the bolt from the inlet joint.

-Separate the coupler from the hose.

-Remove the O-ring from the inlet hole.

-Put the new O-ring into the inlet hose coupler.

-Reinstall the inlet joint bolt.

-Check the fluid level again in the power steering reservoir.
