Vice Grip Turn & Trawl – RLSS National Pool Lifeguard 8th Edition

This method of rescue is designed to secure the head, neck and upper spine of a casualty face down in the water with suspected spinal injuries. The lifeguard applies a vice like grip with their forearms and hands to ensure alignment of the head, neck and upper spine as they turn into a face up position. A lifeguard will apply this procedure in water that is out of a comfortable standing depth for them. Once the casualty is face up, the lifeguard will proceed to trawl them to shallower water, maintaining the vice grip, until they can stand comfortably and safely maintaining the vice grip until the rescue team arrive.
