Stuck Seat Post And Single Speed Gearing Commute Bike Blogger

My old bike has a stuck seat post. I can twist it but not move it vertically. The saddle is too low and I need to raise it.

I am thinking of trying some WD40 or a penetrating oil, and hope that will get the seat post unstuck.

Other ways to unstick a stuck seat post include a pipe wrench, pliers, vise, saw, hammer, or heat. Sometimes it is easiest to twist the seat post with the saddle on, and other times you may have to just cut the seat post and destroy it to remove it.

My bicycle seat post got stuck because I hadn’t pulled it out and greased it in a long while, or I might not have greased it in the first place… Doh!

Today was another record fast bike commute at a little over 10 minutes, partially due to lower traffic and taking a more direct route, and partially due to using a higher gear ratio of 3:1 (52t/17t).

I think I may switch my single speed gear back down to my favorite 2.75:1 gear ratio (52t/19t) because I have to start and stop so much anyway in the city, and I think the easier gear is more fun (starting from a stop in a really high gear is a hassle); however, you can’t strengthen your body to ride a harder gear without training in it.

Finding the perfect singlespeed gear is a balance between good acceleration and top speed, and is a trial and error process where personal preference dictates how much you are willing to sacrifice acceleration and climbing ability for pure speed, depending on how fast you like to spin the pedals.
