Stripping Knots on a High Tensile Fixed Knot Fence

Step-by-step of stripping of knots and vertical stay wires in a high tensile fixed knot fence.

When tying off your fence to end posts or corner posts during fence installation, you sometimes need to strip off knots and stay wires to have enough loose wire to tie.

Using Knipex High Tensile Wire Cutters, a pair of lineman’s pliers, and a small flat head screw driver, we show you how to easily strip knots and a stay wires.

1. Hold the stay wire that you will be stripping so that when going through the fixed knot, the stay wire runs IN FRONT OF the horizontal wires.

2. We want to cut the stay wire just inside of each knot. Fit the tips of the wire cutter’s jaws into the fixed knot JUST BELOW the horizontal wire.

3. Cut the vertical stay wire inside each knot, BE SURE NOT TO CUE THE HORIZONTAL WIRE. At the bottom horizontal wire, cut the stay wire just above the end wrap.

4. Pull the cut piece of stay wire out of each knot.

5. Using your pliers, grip the top part of the knot. With the palm of your hand, pushing on the twisted tail ends of the knot, close your hand and pliers together. This will rotate the top twists on the knot and release the knot from the horizontal wire. Repeat this step for every knot wire.

5a. If you are using a small screwdriver instead of pliers, place the tip of the screwdriver into the top of the knot. Push on the bottom of the knot and stay wire with your palm and open up the knot just like in the previous step.

6. Now that the knots are loose from the horizontal wires, you can twist them back and forth to slide them off of the horizontal wires.

7. The end wraps on the top and bottom horizontal wires should be easily twisted off. If they are tight, you can grip them with your pliers and twist them so they release.

8. Repeat this entire process for every stay wire that needs to be removed until you have enough length on your horizontal wires to work with.
