I started this 4y 2.2 litre Hilux engine on the garage floor using a Ke70 4k toyota starter motor clamped on with vice grip c clamps.
These engines also came in 80s to 90s Hiace vans and other early 80s rear wheel drive toyota’s.
I also used the ignition system off my Lada Niva to start even left the coil connected to the lada and used the lada key to turn ignition on and off. I used a Victa 160cc 2 stroke petrol tank to feed the fuel.
I sat engine on a few retaining wall bricks and a block of wood to level and hold it up off the floor. I touched two wires together to trigger the starter motor.
I used some aerofast tie downs to hold the engine from moving around the floor.
I used jumper leads off both the Hilux and the Lada to provide the power.
I did a compression test afterwards and was between 125 to 135 PSI per cylinder.
The corolla 4k starter did not fit very well and I clamped it on with vice grips and used an adjustable spanner to hold the starter on an angle to engage with fly wheel.
A good bit of Kiwi ingenuity
