Replacing old Washer & Dryer with Whirlpool Cabrio Washer and Gas Dryer

This is an installation video/mini feature review. I bought this set of Whirlpool Cabrio 5.3-cu ft High-Efficiency Top-Load Washer (Chrome Shadow) Model # WTW8500DC and Whirlpool Cabrio 8.8-cu ft Gas Dryer (Chrome Shadow) Model # WGD8500DC.

Make sure to get:
Water connection kit for the washer (don’t cheap out)
Water connection kit for the dryer (this dryer has the steam option, so again, do not cheap out). However, if you want to cheap out, the dryer DOES come with the steam kit.
You will need a GAS dryer connection kit. (check with your local hardware store on state/local limitations here (For MA a gas connection line cannot be more than 36″ – even though the store does sell 48″ kits (due to proximity to RI I think).
Dyer installation kit: Two options here… and the first options has two of it’s own options…. so really it’s three.
Option 1A: You can get the semi-rigid standard exhaust for dryer. Make sure to extend it fully and only use the size piece you need. If you use this kind, you will need to clean it out regularly.
Option 1B: Use rigid pipe, don’t need to clean it as often as the semi-rigid. However, both option 1A and 1B require at least 6″ of space between the back wall and the back of the dryer.
Option 2: Get a periscope adjustable exhaust vent, it is flatter than standard piping (as little as 3 inches), yet has the same air flow. It should perform better than 1A as there are no groves to catch and hold lint.

Tools you will need:

TWO large adjustable wrenches (I used one pipe wrench and 1 adjustable wrench at some parts and two adjustable wrenches in others)
A screw driver (philips)
Large pliers – I used robo-grip adjustable wrench to tighten all water pipes and made sure to use thread sealant on all water pipes as well. I used thread sealant on the gas pipes as well but remember that thread sealant only goes on regular pipe connectors and not flared ones…
Worklight or a flashlight

Optional supplies that help:
Gas leak tester

Make sure you know where the main GAS shut-off switch is. In case of an emergency, open the windows, and have everything you need ready to shutoff the gas supply to the house.

If you feel uncomfortable doing any of this, simply call a professional. However, now you know what they will be doing so you won’t get screwed :D
