Here is a quick way if you are in a pinch to install a UHF or PL-259 connector on some LMR-400. This also is a great way if you only have a torch or low power soldering iron and are not able to get a clean solder on the braid.
The tools you need: Knife, Torch, Solder, Diagonal Cutters, UHF Connector, LMR-400
The braid is folded back over the rubber jacket and then the connector is put on and screwed over the folded back braid making a sort of compression connection to the braid. Then you solder the center pin.
