Mosaics 101: How To Cut Tiles For Mosaics

Learn how to use tile nippers and wheel cutters to cut tiles for mosaic craft projects.

Tile mosaics are gorgeous. In this lesson, you will learn how to use tile nippers and wheel cutters to break glass tiles into smaller pieces. Sometimes when you are working on a mosaic you need a tile that is not square. To cut a tile into a usable shape you can use wheel cutters or tile nippers.

To use either wheel cutters or tile nippers to break mosaic tiles, you will need safety glasses to protect your eyes and leather gloves to protect your hands. When you cut the tiles, tiny glass shards will come off and they can poke through skin. Please be careful!

We like to break the tiles inside a Ziploc bag to capture the broken pieces and shards. Start by grasping the tile in one hand inside the bag then squeeze the nippers onto the edge of the tile. It will start a crack that will break the tile for you. If you choke back on the handles of the nippers it is easier to squeeze them onto the tile. Take a smaller piece that you have broken off and again squeeze the nippers on the edge to break it into smaller pieces. Continue on until you have broken tiles the right size for your mosaic.

You can also use the wheel nippers to cut tiles in the same way. We use both tools but to get started you ca pick one. We like the wheel cutters slightly better than the nippers.
