Mosaics 101: How To Break Off China Roses for Mosaics

Learn how to use a hammer and a chisel to break roses off china knick-knacks for mosaic craft projects.

Broken china mosaics are gorgeous. To add a little dimension and flair to your broken china mosaic projects, why not add china roses? In this lesson, you will learn how to use a hammer and a chisel to break china roses off china or porcelain knick-knacks.

We find china roses on jewelry boxes and other china collectibles at the thrift store. Collect a few ugly pieces to practice on, then buy some pretty ones for your mosaics.

To chisel the rose off a china knick-knack, nestle the collectible in a bed of packing bubbles covered with a hand towel. This will cushion the knick-knack and keep it from slipping.

Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes and leather gloves to protect your hands.

Poke the end of the chisel under the edge of the rose, then hit the back of the chisel will a hammer. Most of the time the rose will pop right off! Now you can glue and grout your china roses right into your broken china mosaic!
