This was done to my 2010 Mini Cooper S (R56). It may not work with any other models.
Specifications:
What you’ll need:
-2 strong pliers
-small tip flat head (common) screw driver
-2 Light Duty or Light Load Die Springs (1-1/2 inches long x 3/4 opening OR 38mm long x 20mm opening)
-You might also need a pair of rubber washers to go between the spring and the hydraulic cylinder (black plastic tube support arm retracts into) IF your hatch doesn’t quite pop up and open all the way.
UPDATE: Please note that I recently removed my springs as I noticed my passenger side strut had started to leak. It eventually failed and I actually had to replace it. Obviously this mod is far from perfect and seems like it will most likely eventually cause damage to one or both struts. Proceed at your own risk.
