Forged Rib Earrings: I started making and selling this style of earrings in 2011, and now I’m showing you how to make your own! (Of course, if you’d rather just buy a pair, the link is below.) They’re fun and easy to wear, lightweight, and — my favorite part — they move! All the forged wires rotate and spin on the handmade headpin — I like to call them “fidget” earrings, because they give me something to play with if I need a distraction. Enjoy this tutorial, and I’d love to see what you make!
All the tools and materials required to make these earrings are listed below. If you’ve dipped your toes into the world of metalsmithing, you probably already have what you need — there’s nothing fancy.

Materials, Tools, and Supplies:
Sterling silver wire: 20-gauge, half-hard, 45 in.
Small piece of scrap wire: 20-gauge, approx. 2 in.
Ruler
Flush cutters
Torch setup:
Torch (I use an oxygen/propane Smith Little Torch)
Striker
Flux (I use Battern’s)
Cross-locking tweezers
Pickle in a pickle pot
Steel bench block
Planishing hammer
Half-round or flat needle file
400-grit abrasive paper
Pliers: Roundnose, chainnose
Sharpie/permanent marker
Flex shaft
Cup bur (with lubricant)
Mandrels: round, one for each length of wire (I used dapping punches.)
1-1/4 in. wire ——– 5 mm mandrel
1-1/2 in. wire ——– 8 mm mandrel
1-3/4 in. wire ——– 11 mm mandrel
2 in. wire ————– 15 mm mandrel
2-1/4 in. wire ——– 19 mm mandrel
