Tonight i tried another new fishing item. Originally intended for night bottom jiggers from boats to fish squid at night, i decided to rig this for shoreline applications. A LED blue squid drop light. Simply twist the housing counter-clockwise & drop the 3 batteries in (don’t cut the plastic). This is the mini & it weighs around 1/8oz. There’s some wind resistance if whipped with no added weight. I use a 1/4oz lead egg with Power Pro 30lbs braid (diameter of 8lbs). Because of extra line stress i recommend using braid or higher rated mono. Unit is roughly 1/8oz negative but i add a small lead egg for more distance because of the wind resistance when casted. If you’re in 4ft or less you can still use extra lead provided you attach a bullet floater with a short 4ft mono fluorocarbon leader. The rod used is a Okuma T-40X 10’9″ Steelhead Medium. Reel is a Shimano Stradic 4K CI4. Leader is 8ft of Sakura Fluorocarbon. Grub is from Landon Yamamoto’s Completely Hooked Lures of Honolulu. Filmed using a Contour Roam2 Action Cam with a Cree 2000lm Headlamp. Don’t think any shoreline angler has thought to use this product in the way i’m using it, but i can tell you it really works! I picked-up a lot of fish in a short time. Forgot to charge my Contour action camera so the video unit gave out on my 2nd Akule Bigeye Scad. I get these off eBay from Asia. For Hawaii they take 4-6 weeks for delivery as they go to San Francisco to be cleared by customs(?) before they route them back to Hawaii. All my friends that i gave one to really love using them!
Recommended Set-Up-
Attach a swivel or snap swivel to your main line, then connect that to one end of the mini squid drop lure (both ends rotate). On the other end attach your pre-set leader. I use 6-8ft of monofilament fluorocarbon with a barrel swivel that connects to a split ring on the squid drop lure itself. I use 2in extended glow grubs by Completely Hooked Lures made into my own customized salt-water flies. Hooks are your preference. You can use cut baits as well.
