How to replace or remove ford explorer tailgate lift support struts (shocks)

This is a 1994 Ford Explorer with bad tailgate lift support struts.
I believe this will work for most Ford Explorer’s from 1991 to 2001.

I replaced the lift supports with Monroe 901164 Gas Charged Lift Supports. Usually sold in singles so you will probably need to order two. Could also use StrongArm 4754 Lift Support.

I could not get the C clips back on with just a flat head screw driver so I used needle nosed pliers that can open wide. Please leave a comment and let us know if you were able to get the new lift supports installed without taking the C clips all the way off, but just prying them up enough, or if you just pressed the new lift supports on top of the ball without releasing the C clips at all.
