How to Replace MINI Cooper Cylinder Head – DIY Tips



Helpful tips on how to replace a high mileage R53 MINI Cooper cylinder head. You can do this job by yourself, without any no air tools or lifts or going into “Service Mode”.

Tools Required: 8mm-21mm short, regular, and deep sockets; set of TORX sockets, 1/2″ socket for drain plug, 32mm shallow for oil filter housing, 19mm shallow swivel socket for timing chain tensioner, assorted swivel extensions, BMW SST Camshaft Removal tool kit, regular and wobble extensions, 1/2″ breaker bar, 10mm short hex drive, LED lights, dead blow hammer, multiple 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″ wrenches, torque wrenches, magnetic pick-up tool, bent needle nose pliers, and a Bentley Manual.

Additional R&R Parts: Intake plenum; exhaust, head and valve cover gasket; thermostat, 10x head bolts; valve cover bolts; timing chain tensioner; spark plug seals; assorted bolts, nuts, and studs from cylinder head may break when torquing, due to becoming brittle from hear over time; injector o-rings.
