Thanks to the viewer who pointed out that I wasn’t clear about finishing the ear wires. All ear wires that you make on your own should always have the part going into your ear filed(with a jewelry file or nail file) so it has no sharp edges or bits that might cut you. The best way to do this is to file it straight across the end and feel it with your finger intermittently to check for any burrs or sharp parts of the wire. Continue filing until there is nothing sharp left and then it it safe for putting through your ear. Thanks again for all you comments!
Ear pin or also called climber earrings seem to be a trend that is catching on fast, and since they are super easy to make I thought I would do a tutorial for how to make them.
I also forgot to mention that for the second version ear pins you will need round nose pliers to make the scroll.
For this project you can use wire from 18-22 gauge but I wouldn’t go much lighter than a 22 because it might be too flimsy to hold the earrings in place. For the projects I used 2, 20 gauge silver 2 inch headpins with about 14, 3mm rose quartz round beads. For the next project I used 12, 4mm square crystal beads and 2, 2 inch 20 gauge silver round head pins. For the projects in the tutorial I used 16, 4mm top-drilled seed pearls and 2, 20 gauge 2 inch silver headpins. For the final project I used 2 pieces of 3 inch silver wire and 8, 4 mm top-drilled flower swarovski crystals and 8, 2mm silver plated round beads. It’s important that you have at least 3/4 inches for the ear wire part as if it’s too short the earrings won’t have enough support at the back of your ear to stay upright. This project is versatile in that you can make the bar part much shorter with tiny beads for a petite look or you can have it run all the way up your ear. Keep in mind that heavier beads will be more difficult to keep in place so you will need a heavier gauge wire to compensate. You can also curve the bar wire to the shape of your ear or leave it straight. For the simplest look you can hammer an inch to an inch and a half of wire and have that as the bar and bend a 3/4 inch ear wire like the projects.
If you need more help with scrolls here’s a link: https://youtu.be/jVNwy3NVAUA you can fast forward to 3:42 to see how they’re done.
I have another tutorial for stick earrings that would work as ear climbers too, just remember to use at least 3/4 of an inch for the ear wire part:
