Hi, there. In this video, I’ll be telling you what you need to know to use toggle clasps. Toggle clasps are usually used for fastening bracelets or necklaces. And the way they work is they consist of some sort of a ring which doesn’t necessarily have to be round as you can see here and some sort of a bar. The important thing about the ring and the bar is the proportions that when you place the bar over the ring, half of the bar should extend beyond the edge of the ring so that it can’t slip back through. And the way they work is very simple. You have your loop on one side and your bar on the other and you just bend over the bar, fold it up through the loop and then open it out again and it just rests in there. And you could see why it needs to be long enough so that it won’t slip through.
Now toggle clasps can be very simple. They can be small and dainty like these; they can be quite decorative like this floral one. This one is sterling silver; most of the rest of the these are base metal. You can see you’ve got antique silver finish, antique gold finish. You can find them in just about any finish that you want for your project. The one thing to keep in mind is that whichever end that you have the toggle bar you can’t have a big bulky bead at the very end of your piece because the bar needs to be able to bend 90 degrees so that it will fit up into the loop.
