You will notice the pliers start closed, to open them push on the lever on the handle which in turn opens the head. To adjust the opening turn the knob to the left or right depending on further open or closed as desired for the task. Then squeeze the handle closed to lock the pliers in place on what ever it is you are working on such as a bolt or a nut. These are the locking pliers.
