FAIR WARNING ! There are dangerous voltages inside the GEOCHRON unit (120 VAC). I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR GEOCHRON OR PERSONAL INJURY TO YOU. MAKE THIS MODIFICATION AT YOUR OWN RISK !
My GEOCHRON STANDARD was 13 years old when I made this mod and the fluorescent tube lights were at times be electrically noisy. This is not a good thing for an Amateur (HAM) Radio Operator to encounter …
GEOCHRON now offers conversion from fluorescent tube lighting to LED tube lighting …
I decided to do this conversion myself, having found LED tubes that were an exact replacement for the F15T8/D fluorescent tubes …

With a few tools (slotted screwdriver, snips, needle-nose pliers, a vise-grip, and a wire stripper), you can make this modification in an hour or two depending upon your experience level with these tools.
Total Cost of this mod in 2015 was $42.31 including shipping. I found the LED tubes on Amazon … they are 6000K (Cool White) and are noticeably brighter when installed inside the GEOCHRON …

GEOCHRON charges $225 (2015 cost) for this conversion (included in the cost of a rebuild for a limited time) and your light tube bracket assemblies may be gone for up to two weeks … it took me about an hour to convert the first tube, but less than 20 minutes for the second one (and I was shooting the video while I made the second conversion) …
GEOCHRON has a video describing this LED modification … they say that there will be much less heat inside the GEOCHRON unit and that should make the plastic map display and other parts last longer …
The glass face of my Geochron is now COLD to the touch …
