DIY GoPro Mask Mount

I found a cool way to mount my GoPro camera to my mask (I am using a Tusa Genesis) using a tripod mount, a piece of speargun band, and a couple of washers!

(make sure the washer and tripod stud are stainless steel!)

I started by using vice grips to get a good hold on the tripod screw (I believe it was a 1″ tripod bolt) , and heated it up for about 20 seconds with a butane torch.

Not too hot now!!!

You want enough heat to melt gently through the plastic without burning it or catching fire! You can do this several times in small increments and pull it back out before it dries, this way it gives you more control on how deep your setting the bolt. Keep a bucket of water on standby to stop any flames, and to quench the plastic once you have it set right. This kinda locks it in place.

Next I cut a small bushing out of spear band rubber, and with a little saliva, I pushed/screwed the bushing down leaving only a small 1/8″ of the tripod bolt protruding out of the end.

Place a 3/4″-1″ stainless fender washer on the bolt, followed by a nylon washer. (this helps keep tension between the tripod mount and metal washer so it doesn’t loosen up easily)

Then simply sand or grind off the back side of the actual tripod base so it doesn’t make contact with your forehead. Doesn’t take much…

That’s it! Tighten your new GoPro mount down… as you do, the rubber bushing will bulge out a bit and this is what keeps the majority of the tension on the rig.

No folks it won’t fall off. I have tried this many times with no problems. However I obviously can’t take responsibility for you building this wrong, breaking your mask, burning the sh$% out of yourself, or losing your rig! If your underage, have your parents help you with the butane torch portion!

The most important factor is finding a mask with a decent plasting housing between/above the lenses. You can kinda tell by pulling the silicone skirt down where your brow sits and make sure you have enough room to build.

I hope this helps you guys and gals with your own custom build to record your underwater adventures!

Thanks for watching :0 )
