CHOCOLATE BEACH TREVALLY PAPIO!

This area along West Loch, Pearl Harbor is called Chocolate Beach because the water turns to “liquid chocolate” after a heavy rain. Whippers rely heavily on shiny metal spoons like Crocodiles or Kastmasters to fish here because the “flashes” produced by the spoon’s rotation makes it easier for the fish to spot. On average days normal artificial grubs or baits will work on the surface.

Dunking live or dead baits work extremely well here as the fish’s senses will replace the visual perception while hunting. This day i switched all my live crab baits to cut squid as i was getting multiple Sting Ray hits constantly. Since i don’t eat Rays i didn’t want to hook them if they’re around. Normally i catch large Jack Trevally using live or dead crabs. Today it was Papio (local term for Jack Trevallys under 10lbs). Everything loves squid!
