Hi, there. In this video I’m going to tell you about a very useful tool called nylon jaw pliers. You’ll use them in many different ways in your jewelry making.

These are nylon jaw pliers. Just as you might expect, the jaws are nylon. The nice thing about most of your nylon jaw pliers is that these jaws, you can see mine are starting to get a little bit beat up and well used, but you can purchase replacements. You just undo the little screw. Often they come with a couple of additional screws. Then you can just screw them back on and have fresh clean jaws.

Nylon jaw pliers are useful for many things in jewelry making. One of the most common uses for nylon jaw pliers is for straightening wire. Here’s a piece of pretty bent wire. I’m just going to hold it with one tool and then slide my pliers. Of course, the heavier the gauge, the little bit harder you have to work to straighten out that wire. You see that works pretty well.

Another thing that nylon jaw pliers are great for is just holding things. Perhaps you have something that you don’t want to mar. You don’t want to dent it with another tool. The nylon jaw pliers will protect whatever it is that you’re holding. If you need to flatten something, straighten it out, and you don’t want to make dents in it, for example, this one is hammered but this piece is not, you don’t want to mar that nice round finish, you can hold onto it with your nylon jaw pliers. Then do whatever other work you need to do on it, and you won’t mar it.

You can use it for straightening wire, for flattening components. Another thing you might be surprised to know is that you can use your nylon jaw pliers to harden your components. Here’s a piece. As I hammered it, it got hardened. It’s going to hold its shape nicely as a hook in a piece of jewelry. Like I said before, say this one I didn’t want a hammered finish on it, but I did want it to be hardened so that these loops don’t come undone. Just the action of squeezing the wire between the jaws of the nylon pliers actually will harden the wire. You can use your nylon jaw pliers to harden any components, jump rings, links for chain. Anything that you need that just needs a little bit extra reinforcement without changing the shape of it in the least little bit you can use your nylon jaw pliers for. A very useful tool.
