Hi there. In this video, I’ll be telling you all about flat nose pliers, how they’re similar to chain nose, and how they differ, and how useful they can be in your jewelry making.

Flat nose pliers really are a variation of chain nose pliers. Chain nose pliers are one of your most basic jewelry making tools, and they look like the familiar needle nose pliers that you would find at a hardware store with one important exception. The jaws on the inside are smooth. They don’t have the serrations which make them very handy for picking things up, but if you’re working with jewelry pieces and with wire those serrations would mar your work. Pretty much any of your jewelry making pliers are going to have nice smooth jaws on the inside. The difference with flat nose pliers you can see that the edges are squared off so they’re a rectangular shape rather than a tapered shape. Also, they’re flat. When the jaws come together, they’re nice and flat and you have a lot of surface area here for grabbing.

These are wonderful for holding onto wire. For example, if you have a piece of wire that needs straightening and you want a firm grip on it while you run nylon jaw pliers through it, flat nose pliers are good for that. You can use chain nose as well, but the flat nose just make sure that you have a really firm grip. Another thing flat nose pliers are great for is if you’re opening chain or links that are rather unusual size. These links are flat as they go around, and they can be kind of tricky to hold onto. Flat nose pliers you can just go ahead and grab it, and then you can use another pair of flat nose or a pair of chain nose. You can see how much more surface area and how much easier it is to grab it with these flat nose than with the chain nose. Then, you can twist your links of chain open and close them again for your project, and you have a nice firm grip. The same thing with jump rings. It works the same way. You usually use two pairs of pliers and a pair of flat nose gives you plenty of area to grip onto as you’re opening and closing your jump ring. You have a great deal of control.

Another thing that flat nose pliers are great for is bending wire, because you have this nice sharp edge. You can hold onto your wire and bend it at any angle you want. In fact, you can use your flat nose to get 180 degree bends just by wrapping around, and then you can grab that piece and squeeze it and get very crisp sharp and precisely placed bends in your wire.

I hope now you see how useful a pair of flat nose pliers can be in your jewelry making.
