This is how I used to change O2 sensors when I was working in a garage. I got to changing about 1 a week so it became a matter of doing it quickly. For the most part if the exhaust is warm or hot it helps with removal. The tools I used were ordinary except for the wrench I modified for installation. If you are doing 1 or 2 in your lifetime then I wouldn’t worry about the wrench modification. A 7/8 inch deep socket and combination wrench are your definite needed tools. The 1/2 inch drive ratchet was used with a pipe because I didn’t have my power bar readily available. The pipe is also good to have in case the O2 sensor is behind the engine like it is on some 4 cylinder engines. It gives you some contact in a tight place. Just line it up with the sensor and smack the pipe with the hammer. It breaks the sensor upper half off and allows you to get the socket on the sensor. You may have to use some flex’s to line up the extensions and socket to the ratchet but it will work. I use the pipe to give me added leverage for cold sensors or really stubborn ones. When I was doing these in the garage it took longer to get the car set up and wait for the part than it did for the procedure. Parts delivery only took 10 minutes and the part was ordered even before I got the car up on the hoist. There is a special socket you can buy for this job but I couldn’t justify the cost when I was only doing one every week or so. I also like to modify tools for the job when I can.
