    Jack Rakove’s talk challenges “originalist” interpretations of the Constitution, such as those advanced by Justices Clarence Thomas and the late Antonin Scalia, which attempt to produce the best linguistic understanding of what the original text would have meant to an informed reader at the time of ratification. Against this view, Rakove argues that originalism should take political concerns and purposes much more seriously. Professor Rakove’s talk is co-sponsored by the Salvatori Center’s Lofgren Program in Constitutionalism.
