This is a quick way to make the Marlinspike hitch knot. Although you shouldn’t make knots on cables meant to be installed somewhere, you can employ this knot to pull on ROPE that is attached to the cable you are trying to pull through a raceway. The marlinspike hitch has the advantage of being a quick and secure knot tied in the middle of a length of rope for the purpose of pulling in one direction only.
If you need to apply a lot of force onto a rope you can use a length of pipe, for example, and you can grip a piece of pipe far more securely that grabbing the rope with your hands. This channel lock-styled pliers are used in this video in lieu of a marlinespike.
DISCLAIMER: Using this knot and ropes-in-general, can be DANGEROUS. Knots in general will reduce the strength of rope by about half. A 3/4 polyester flat tape rope (Mule tape) has a breaking strength of 2500lbs, divided by 2 = 1250 lbs — If using a 12:1 safety factor you shouldn’t exceed 100lbs of force. Nylon rope should not be used for pulling. This technique calls for inserting your fingers in the bight. If pulling in tandem your fingers can be amputated if the rope is pulled from behind you and your fingers are caught in a loop of the rope.
